Understanding the New Age Movement

New Age is actually nothing new! It’s a combination of Eastern Mysticism, Hinduism, and paganism. Shirley MacLaine, a famous actress gave it some clout back in the 1980’s – 1990’s. Although they do believe in “God,” they do not accept Jesus as the risen Savior. They say Jesus is spiritual model and guru who is now an “ascended master.”1 Some publishing’s say New Agers believe in human reincarnation, that there is no real heaven or hell, and “humans are essentially divine; God is within each person; everyone has the “Christ Spirit”; everyone is potentially good.”2 However, now in the 21st century, some New Agers say they do believe in heaven, but believe there are many ways to get there. It’s sort of like whatever you believe, as long as you love your neighbor you will be okay.

Rick Renner in his 1988 book, Seducing Spirits and Doctrines of Demons, described watching a secular television show that featured a whole panel of New Agers. He said they kept saying, “God is love. God is love. You don’t need to be afraid of the ‘walk-ins.’” The term “walk-ins” means spirits who walk in and become a part of you. In other words, this is an open invitation for a demon to enter, not just your life, but your person. Renner says a Unity pastor on that same talk show called Christians “primitive” and said Christians must be done away with because they believe there is only one way.3

The New Age movement combines the spirituality of angels, spirits, inner consciousness, God, and working for righteousness by loving others and loving the earth (creation). The problem is they make themselves “open” to all spirits and believe that you earn righteousness by being nice and taking care of the environment.

While being nice and loving the environment are both necessary, we know it’s an abhorrent deception using some principles of truth sprinkled with deceiving lies, which lure you into believing that you can work your way to heaven or the next life. It has compromised truth in the name of love.

Truth is love! A lie is not love ; a lie is deception that always has itself in mind above everything and everybody else.

Right now as we speak, Satan is trying to form his own one-world religion which professes:

  • God is real.
  • All religions serve and worship the same God.
  • There is no sin.
  • There is no hell.
  • Everyone will be okay, as long as you love your neighbor as yourself.
  • Redemption is not necessary.
  • Jesus was a prophet. He is not the son of God, and He did not rise from the dead.
  • Angels and the spirits of the dead can help guide you in life.

Sound familiar? So what does the Bible have to say about all this?

John 3:3
Jesus answered and said to him, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.”

John 14:6
Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.

Acts 4:12
Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”

Romans 1:16
For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek.

President, George W. Bush in an interview on October 4, 2007, said; “I believe in an almighty God, and I believe that all the world, whether they be Muslim, Christian, or any other religion, prays to the same God.”4 It’s what we call “politically correct,” designed not to hurt or offend anyone. It is compromising truth in the name of love.

Oprah Winfrey is now at the helm of the New Age movement. “…one of the biggest mistakes humans make is to believe that there is only one way. Actually, there are many diverse paths leading to what you call God.”5

This movement has caused ministers to sway in their commitment to God’s Word. Many churches have created what they call “seeker-sensitive services,” in which they do not mention scripture, sin, hell, righteousness, the blood of Christ, praying in tongues, the gifts of the Spirit, or have “altar calls.” The idea is not to offend anyone. My question is “Why would anyone be offended by the truth? And if they were, would that make us wrong?” Paul stated that all things need to be done in love, but he never said to compromise truth. As I stated earlier, I believe if you stray from truth, you are only hurting yourself and everyone around you.

If you really love people, you will tell them the truth. It doesn’t mean you judge them or impose your values on them; they still have a choice. But to withhold from them the very certainty of a Holy God, a heaven which requires the sinless blood of Christ to obtain entrance, and an unquenchable flame of torment for eternity to those who refuse the “One Way and Only Way” would not only be unloving, it would, in my opinion, be heinous.

John 17:17
Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth.

Homosexuality and lesbianism are two huge voices of the New Age Movement. Pastors like me, preaching from Romans 1:18-32, and other scriptures that call “alternate lifestyle” sin, are labeled as “haters.” The actual truth is that we are telling the truth in love, not hate. Our message is a message of mercy and truth: you can be forgiven, healed, and set free from the confusion through the blood of Jesus. Jesus did not condemn the woman caught in adultery – neither do we condemn those in any type of sexual immorality. The message is the same; go and sin no more.

Psalm 85:10-13
10 Mercy and truth have met together; Righteousness and peace have kissed.
11 Truth shall spring out of the earth, And righteousness shall look down from heaven.
12 Yes, the Lord will give what is good; And our land will yield its increase.
13 Righteousness will go before Him, And shall make His footsteps our pathway.

There is never a good reason to compromise truth. Without truth, you will never arrive at true mercy, righteousness, and peace.
